Jack rubbed his face with both hands, struggling hard to reel his anger back in enough to not just flat out scream at Chance.

“What’s so special about a kid that’s not even yours that you treat them better than your own flesh and blood?” he growled, regretting that there was no way to ask without the question making him sound jealous.

“You’ve done nothing to prove I was anything but a burden and a disappointment to you my whole life. And you seriously have the fucking nerve to ask me what my problem is?”

“If I don’t ask, I have no way of knowing,” he pointed out. They both knew he couldn’t read emotional cues correctly and didn’t understand them when he could figured out the emotion attached to them.

He was quiet for a moment, trying to piece everything together before saying anything. Not that it mattered, he knew there was nothing he could do or say that would make the boy feel any better.

“I wanted you to be me. I thought if you were exactly like me, you’d never leave. That you’d stay. I don’t like people leaving,” he confessed almost quietly. “Your mother…she was there physically, sure, but she wasn’t there. She wasn’t who she was before she started hurting herself or who she is now. It was like she had left me all over again. And then there was you. The only little part of her I had left and I didn’t want them to take you from me. I didn’t want you to leave. Without your mother, I have no way to gauge when I’m overstepping things. But you were never unwanted. No matter what I said when I was at my angriest.”

He didn’t know why he was surprised at what was bothering Jack, but he honestly was.

“I wouldn’t say that there’s anything inherently special about Arcadia, but she would probably feel comfortable around you. I don’t know why she latched onto me instead of someone kinder and I know she would be better off staying with anyone else in the family, but she won’t budge on it.” And it stressed him out a little too much at times, a flicker of it sliding across his features for the briefest moment.

raisedinthesmoke:

“Stay here.”

The words were punctuated by Lex sort of snuggling a little closer, although he didn’t seem to have consciously been aware of it as he did so, the action clearly that of an instinct to seek safety and comfort to ease his distress.

He shook his head at the question. Even if he had been hungry before, the stresses of the night had robbed him completely of his appetite for now, and even the thought of Dev leaving him alone for only a few moments had him fretting a little.

He nodded and kept his arms wrapped around the other, still a little unsure as to what he was actually supposed to do. He didn’t smell quite as distressed, so Devereux was taking small comfort in that at the very least.

“If you do get hungry, everything I brought up while you were in the shower is stuff that can be left out, so,” he shrugged, gesturing to the little pile of food on the bedside table.

“And what if you don’t?”

Ollie was shutting down that line of thinking before it could get traction, for both their sakes. Neither of them would find any comfort in dredging up the past, particularly Ollie, who still buried himself deep in denial over it, for the most part, to cope with the damage it had left.

“I love you, okay? Can we just leave it at that before we both get too stressed out and one of us ends up sleeping on the couch again?”

“You mean before I end up sleeping on the couch again.”

No matter how bad fights got anymore, he always let Ollie take the bed. Mostly because he never slept when they were fighting and would often come home candy coated in red and that was the last thing he wanted to track into the bed.

“I’m just….scared of myself more tan anything.”

“Not hard enough!”

Jack was positively glowering with fury now, mostly out of sheer frustration and the lingering questions he knew he would never get satisfactory answers for. As much as he knew Chance wasn’t capable of a lot of things, it didn’t stop the part of Jack that needed answers and validation from frantically wanting to force them out of him, by any means necessary.

He just needed something, anything, that would prove that Chance did have some sort of actual genuine affection for his son. Even the sort he seemed to be capable of showing to Sera and the adopted pup. Jack wanted to know why he wasn’t he good enough for that? Chance’s own flesh and blood, and Sera’s son. Why didn’t Chance value his existence the same way?

His expression remained steady, not giving the boy anything he could read one way or another. Instead, he was studying his son, trying to figure out what exactly was bothering the boy and coming up painfully blank.

“What do you want me to do or say? What are you holding back?” He sounded almost genuinely curious, as close to it as he ever really got. There was something in his eyes, something other than the cold hardness they usually held, but it wasn’t a cruel amusement either.
