Delaine picked up on the anxious shift in Lewis’s posture as they drove, a faint smirk creeping across the older males features. If it were anyone else, there was a chance he’d mistake it for a change of heart about wanting to hook up with a stranger, but he recognised the subtle tension as anticipatory rather than second-guessing.
“How much further?” he finally asked, needing to break the silence. Patience might have been a virtue but it wasn’t one Lewis had ever really possessed, even as a child. It was definitely a drawback to growing up in an age of instant gratification.
Bailey wasn’t going to back down. Not if the other was in trouble of any kind.
“Look, I’m just saying I know people who can help is all. Whatever it is you think you can’t get away from, they can get you out of it alive. I know because they did the same for me.”
He knew it was a long shot, but he couldn’t just ignore it when he came across another wolf that was suffering. Even if the guy told him to tuck off and didn’t want to hear him out, at least he could say he tried.
His jaw set into hard lines at that words and the sudden flare of anger was not hard to miss. There was no such thing as safe for him and there never would be. His dad had been proof enough of that and the fact that his mother only had no siblings left alive as far as he knew.
“You don’t know a damn thing about what my situation is and if they catch me talking to a mutt, they’ll kill us both.”
It was the only warning he was going to give no matter how much a little part of him wanted so desperately to believe him.
Came home from work to 4 tiny gremlins and very tired but content momma. I’m just glad miss Katniss got through birthing her first litter without trouble since I wasn’t able to be there during it.
He answered with a small nod, readjusting the items on his back with a roll of his shoulders to hide the hesitation that still lingered in his posture, trying to force back his natural instincts to flee since he didn’t want to make Vega feel bad for all the effort she’d gone to just because he had difficulty handling new situations or letting anyone get close to him.
The stiffness wasn’t lost on her and she appreciated the effort he was putting into everything so much. She only kept hold of his hand long to make sure he was steady when they popped into the middle of the living room area, the light from the window more than enough for the time being.
“Welcome to what used to be literally nowhere before the world went to shit.”
