♫ Xander and Jayne

Song::I Will Follow You Into the Dark-Deathcab For Cutie

Avery thought he was an idiot, but Layla understood. Layla had been in the same position as Jayne more than once and she was the only one that gave Xander any sense of hope over the entire situation.

It weighed on his mind a lot more than he wanted to admit and it was enough to make him a little clingy at times. He never said it, but he knew Jayne had the same train of thought some times. It was a look of shared fear, maybe not on an outright level, but some underlying itch that only made itself known in a certain kind of touch.

He had watched Teddy’s meltdowns over losing Layla in her previous lives, he knew he had the same genetic potential, but he forced it down, kept his fears as hidden as possible.

If there was some way for him to follow Jayne into that quiet darkness, he would take it without second thought or hesitation and he didn’t exactly care what the cost might be.

♫ Vega and Rabbit

Song::I Won’t Give Up-Jason Mraz

It wasn’t easy, but maybe that was an understatement. Vega hadn’t known what to expect when she had been assigned to him, but it hadn’t been this. It had never occurred to her that protect him would mean bring him back because she couldn’t do much else if he got hurt. It never occurred to her that protect him would mean from his own thoughts on himself. The latter being the harder of the tasks.

How in hell was she supposed to convince him that he was worth more than he saw? She barely even knew him and he wasn’t making that easy either. She wasn’t entirely sure he knew himself outside of his job and his trauma and that was definitely way above what she was capable of fixing.

But she continued on, refusing to give up on what she was supposed to do, refusing to give up on him. Because someone needed to stay by his side. Because he needed to know that there was at least one person in the world that cared enough to stick it out.

So she stayed, some days out of sight, some days annoying him. She was always there when he slept, close enough to make sure no one else could get to him but far enough that he didn’t have to know she was there. Even if he never saw her as more than something to tolerate, she was going to be there until it came time to let him go for real and even then, she was damn sure going to make sure he wasn’t alone for that.

♫ Devin and Zayde

Song::Sad Song-We the Kings feat. Elena Coats

Lissa had been harping on his relentlessly since they had left the city behind them. He had promised her they could stay there, she had loved the run down parts of it and the abandoned buildings. It had always made him nervous that she seemed so content in the worst parts of the place, but she was stronger than he was and he knew she would be safe over all.

She had even liked Zayde well enough to not be overly pissed that he had told the other the truth about them.

“What about your boyfriend? Don’t you think he’ll be upset that we left without any fucking warning?” she snapped, arms crossed as she glared at him.

Devin had no idea how to tell her that it was over, that he had picked his public image and making his shitty father happy over what he had thought was a good thing.

“Just drop it, Lis. He…It’s done. It’s over. Fucking drop it,” he growled, the sound lacking threat when he reeked of despair.

But of course she wouldn’t drop it and the truth came spilling out with shuddering sobs and her swearing up and down that the human was dead if she ever got her hands on him.

He knew she was just trying to protect him, but the words didn’t help when he felt like he was missing parts of himself.

♫ Deveraux and Lex

Song::Stay-Rihanna feat. Mikky Ekko

There was something there, he had to believe that much. Why else would Lex keep coming back? Why else would it bother him so damn much if ever he had to spend a night without the fragile human curled up in his arms?

When he wasn’t there, Devereux barely even ate. Honestly, he felt a little pathetic, but his dads told him it was normal for what he was. Wolves had a deeper instinctual layer when it came to that sort of thing.

It didn’t make him feel a whole lot better. Cammie especially didn’t help with her constant questioning about why there was a human allowed to come and go as he pleased. She didn’t understand why Devereux got snippy with her over it and he hated making his little sister pout, but he didn’t know how to explain it either.

He just wanted Lex to stay.

“I dunno. I think my parents were pretty surprised I didn’t inherit the whole ‘polyamory’ thing from them. That’s pretty big in my family, from what I can gather, so I’m kinda the black sheep in that respect.” Kelly mused with a slight shrug, a shy smile ghosting over his lips.

“They weren’t upset by it at all but I think they just figured I’d be genetically predisposed to it or something.”

“Hardly. Your mother has always been an unusual wolf, even as a pup. I honestly cannot think of a single other wolf in your family that is truly poly and I have met quite a few of them,” he assured, nuzzling at him a little once more.

“I think they would only be upset if you were unhappy.”

“Well, I was born pre-this mess, like around 2020-ish and Cord’s older than me. I think they got most of their stuff when it was still brand new, honestly. They’re really good with that sort of stuff.”

She knew Cord had rebuilt the bar with their bare hands and had personally seen the demon get cars up and running again, so none of it really surprised her. But this was the closest to animated Vega had ever seen Rabbit and not in a telling her off sort of way.

“So…are you interested in going?”

Being reminded that Vega wasn’t human didn’t really help things a whole lot, so hearing that the place she wanted to take him to was owned by someone else who wasn’t set him on edge a little.

“You’re not gonna quit bugging me about it until I agree, are you?” he asked, figureing that he didn’t have nearly as much choice in the matter since Vega had actually gone to the trouble of getting Red to let him take time off in the first place.

She sighed softly but shrugged. She was making an honest attempt, trying to find something he would like, but even that didn’t seem like it was going to work.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to. I just thought you’d like it there because Cord likes some of the same stuff is all.” She wasn’t going to force the issue.

“You’re not close with your older siblings?” He knew that happened in most families if the age gap was big enough, but the Sargent siblings had always been close, so it seemed strange. “I take it you don’t mean she’s from Greece?” he joked.

“Uh, no. Most of them are awful people. Mort’s a sweetie, Sera is….Sera’s something else entirely. But the twins and Jericho are terrible, terrible people.” And she wasn’t sure which of them she was the most terrified of. “Not really.”
