“I don’t know,” he murmured in response.
It was the truth in as much as he didn’t know how to put things into words that wouldn’t sound stupid or make things worse.
“I just…”
He’d never felt so awful at trying to just talk to Devin before. It felt like he’d lost all ability to say anything that felt worthwhile, especially when right now mostly he just felt worthless. It took him a moment, but he gathered the courage to at least say the only thing that was solid out of all of the shit in his head right now, and even Zayde was surprised with hos small and remorseful he sounded as he said it.
“I don’t know how to fix things, but all I want is to try to get back some of what we had. I know I don’t deserve it, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me. Nothing else matters to me now except trying to make things right.”
“You broke my heart, Zayde, it’s going to take time,” he answered truthfully, the pain he still felt over it all creeping into his tone. He couldn’t even really look at the other when he answered, but he needed to be honest.
Setting the food aside, he pulled one knee to his chest and closed his eyes, trying to word things carefully.
“It took months for Lis to get me even remotely functional and then she got shot. Right now, she needs to be my priority because she’s the only family I have. At the end of everything, she’s the one constant in my life.
“I love, I really fucking do, so please don’t think I don’t. But this is going to take time. And I don’t have a lot of that right now so it’s going to take patience too.”
