His expression changed to one of mild embarrassment at being noticed, Zeke looking at the floor with a frown of his own.

“No, I’m fine. Really,” he attempted to reassure, not wanting her to think she’d triggered the turn in his mood. “Just having a little trouble adjusting to the fact that I sort of have no idea who I really am as a person. Like, at all.”

Her expression lightened almost instantly and it took every bit of self restraint she had not to invade his personal space. 

“Oh. Well, I can help you learn? I mean, that’s the whole point of getting out a bad situation, right? I was a lot younger than you when I got taken out of my mess, but I had support in learning to adapt and I could be that for you if you want,” she offered, trying not to ramble and failing miserably.
