“Stop,” he said, the word coming out more firm than most things Leo said. He rolled into his side to look at Zia as he spoke. “I would so not be better off without you, dude. I care about literally one other person and I think he’d kill me if I ran into him again.” Raphael was still the angel of loyalty and Leo had betrayed him, after all. “I don’t want to be doing anything else. I don’t want to be spending time with anyone else. And if I did, I wouldn’t be here.”

There were tears in the boy’s eyes as he looked away, unable to meet Leo’s gaze. He wanted to say he hadn’t always been this much of a mess, but it wasn’t exactly true. His mom never wanted him and he had constantly been told his dad didn’t give a shit either. Hell, he knew he had a sister and she seemed happy and wanted from what little he could tell when he finally found the cafe his dad’s mother owned. It had made him feel worse. “You shouldn’t care.”

“I’m…. not even sure I can die with my genes, so I guess that’s out? But dude, are you really gonna let Aunt Ava lecture me on this one? Because that sounds awful and I don’t wanna experience it at all,” he answered. “Well, if it makes you feel better, you don’t look like a zombie, but sleep sounds like a good plan. Just maybe don’t fuck with sleep dust or who knows when you’ll wake up.”

“Pretty sure the whole family gets lectured by her eventually. She is sort of really into tough love,” he pointed out with a shrug. He’d been hit with a wooden spoon once or twice, but it hadn’t been much of an issue. “Yeah, I think we learned that lesson from my grandfather. He ended up off the face of the earth for a few decades over that stuff.”

That wasn’t really what Zayde meant, but it was clear that Devin wasn’t aware enough to pick up on it, which made Zayde’s heart sink a little at the belief that it meant things wouldn’t be like this when he was recovered.

He’d been trying harder to turn himself around after talking to Lissa, but this felt like a setback and it was already testing the strength of his convictions, Zayde having to mentally remind himself that it would take time and that he had to learn to wait things out instead of panicking and acting recklessly on impulse when he felt like the ground was slipping out from under him again.

He shifted a little closer to Zayde out of instinct more than anything. The boy still just smelled like home to the feline part of him and he needed that more than he was willing to let on.

“Stay…” he mumbled out, eyes half closed as he hugged the pillow a little tighter. He didn’t want to be alone, he didn’t want Zayde to leave, but beyond that, he didn’t know what he wanted.

rustandglass:

Zayde felt nervous. This was the first conversation they’d had that wasn’t an argument, Zayde apologizing in circles or Devin trying to talk some sense into him to stop him doing something stupid. It was civil, and Zayde worried it was only because Devin wasn’t quite straight in the head right now.

“Yeah, I guess?” he mumbled with a small nod, fidgeting with the hem of the sheet. “Doesn’t mean you don’t need looking after too though.”

He was a little too out of it to realize that the other was nervous as he wrapped his arms around one of the extra pillows. He could never sleep well without something to hold on to.

“Tal’s here for the night to make sure we’re both stable. I bounce back quick, faster healing. Just need to sleep it off, promise,” he murmured, giving him a small smile.

rustandglass:

“No, it’s fine. You okay?”

Zayde had fallen asleep while he’d had been dealing with Lissa, but he knew well enough from what she’d told him earlier that Devin would be a little worse for wear after he gave her some of his blood, so Zayde wasn’t all that surprised he was a little out of it, just worried instead and in a better frame of mind to actually try to help instead of adding to his stress.

“Woozy, but I do this twice a week,” he answered, grabbing his juice bottle and taking a deep drink before settling back against the pillows.

“Worth it though. Lissa’s actually able to eat solid foods again, so it’s a good start.”

He had completely forgotten that he was in just sweatpants and that he had bulked up quite a bit since the last time they had been together.

@rustandglass

Giving as much blood as he did was always physically exhausting and Devin wasted no time just falling into his bed once he was sure Lis was stable. He was out of it enough to, for a moment, forget that Zayde was still there until he sat up to make sure his phone was plugged in and practically jumped.

“Shit, sorry. Startled me,” he mumbled.
