Zayde flinched at the comment, but it made him no less determined to get the fuck out of there, despite his growing frustration at not knowing how to actually do that.

That wasn’t the thing that bothered him the most though. He was used to feeling trapped, so this was par for the course. What bothered him was the feeling of being mocked and humiliated by someone who clearly had no idea about why he behaved the way he did and just wrote him off as a spoiled brat and a waste of space like everyone else did.

Devin turned back to the stove, if it could really be called that, and turned the heat off. The eggs slid easily onto a chipped but clean plate and he sat the food on the makeshift table.

“Sit the fuck down and eat before you literally drop dead,” he sighed, his anger lessening slightly over just how pathetic the other seemed to be.

He made a good call and she took a sip of the añejo tequila, pleasantly pleased with the quality of it. His answer drew an arched eyebrow. “Is there often danger out in the middle of the desert?”

“Take in refugees. Place is a sanctuary, hence the no weapons rule.” It was easier to subdue someone if he didn’t have to deal with a gun pointed at his face. He’d survive it, sure, but it would still fucking hurt.

rustandglass:

“Get fucked!”

It was enough to have Zayde answer with a snarl, but it didn’t go beyond that. Instead, he decided he was better off just leaving and going to find somewhere else to curl up and sleep off his comedown, though he would find just as little peace if he ended up going home.

He didn’t know how exactly he’d ended up at Lissa’s brother’s place, much less if he’d been wearing a jacket or anything, or where exactly here was, but he’d take his chances as is, heading for what he hoped would be the way out.

“More of a top,” he shot back, completely offhanded. It was sort of a general thing for him and definitely showed how much he cared over pissing the other off.

The way he was going wasn’t going to get him out of the warehouse he had been modifying, but it was sort of amusing to watch him try to navigate the place.

babyitsmagic:

“Noted.” The threat wasn’t appreciated, but she could understand his need to voice it.

“Travelling. It was along the way and it feels like magic. I was intrigued.”

He was silent as he studied her for a moment before pulling himself up and over the bar top. If nothing else could be said, he was great at guessing what anyone drank. He filled a glass and slid it to her before grabbing the bottle of whiskey he had been drinking when he passed out.

“Wards. Safety shit mostly.” And a few other tweaks he had picked up on over the years.

rustandglass:

“No wonder Lissa prefers my company if she has to put up with you being such a smug asshole all the time.”

It was obvious the kid wasn’t above taking cheap shots, regardless of what consequences might occur from them, his attitude more than just that typical of cocky youth. The flatness in his tone betrayed that he just didn’t give enough of a shit about himself or if his mouth got him into something he couldn’t handle, almost as much as him being passed out and borderline overdosed the night before did.

“Better a smug asshole than some little rich prick spending daddy’s money on cocaine because no one at home loves him. You reek of self loathing.”

It was a step over the line, sure, but if it kept the kid from dragging his little sister to the grave with him than so be it.

rustandglass:

That was a statement he couldn’t argue with. Zayde acted the way he did because his father was such an overbearing piece of shit, but he wasn’t about to give a stranger the satisfaction of knowing that about him.

“Yeah, well you don’t know shit about me either, so looks like we’re fuckin’ square.”

“Maybe not, but it does seem like I struck a nerve.”

He could smell it on the other and it gave him a weird sense of satisfaction. Devin sort of wondered how far he could push that particular vein to see how big of a reaction he could get.

babyitsmagic:

She considered that for a moment, tilting her head while she thought it over. “The cane is a weapon,” she conceded. “But it is also functional. Does it help if I have no intentions to use it?”

“See that ya don’t or it’ll be the last mistake you ever make.” It was a little on the threatening side, he knew, but he was still trying to force himself awake.

“How’d you come by this place anyway?”

rustandglass:

“Pretty sure Lissa is old enough to make her own decisions.”

Zayde didn’t know why he was bothering to argue, but he figured there were probably still enough drugs in his system to be the reason, as much as he felt like death warmed over at that moment, hovering in a state that felt somewhere between the aches and chills of an oncoming fever and the sickness and disorientation of severe dehydration.

“You’d probably get along with my dad. You sound just like him.”

“Pretty sure you don’t know fucking shit about my little sister.”

The other looked like he was about to fall over, but Devin didn’t really give a fuck anymore. He was tempted to honestly hit the other and he didn’t even know his name. It was a new one, even for him.

“I doubt it because, clearly, you need a better fucking dad if this is how you’re living your life.”

rustandglass:

If Zayde looked like shit, he felt a thousand times worse, the sensation telling him the comedown was worse than the hangover, and the pissed off stranger lecturing him wasn’t going to help alleviate the feeling any time soon.

“Fuck off,” he muttered sullenly, not entirely sure for a moment who the other was referring to since he had no idea where the fuck he’d ended up last night.

“Ooh, I’m fucking wounded by that oh so witty remark,” he muttered, a bitter laugh catching in his throat. He fucking hated kids like this, the spoiled rich boy type with more money than common sense.

“Go near Lissa again with any sort of drugs and I’ll personally drop you off to the types that would cut off your fucking ear and send it to your mommy and daddy for money.”
