Zeke remained defensive for as long as Bailey did, the boy and Molly’s welfare top priority to the hunter regradless of what happened.

“Yeah, well the road to Hell was paved with good intentions, so how about we just get done what needs to be done and we figure out where to go from there?”

He wasn’t trying to threaten anyone. He just wanted the pups safely through the procedure to remove the implants so he had peace of mind that they could be safely taken off the grid and hidden from his father and the rest of the clan.

“Know a demon that would agree with that sentiment but that’s neither here nor there,” he remarked, not at all subtle in things as he continued to play with Cadi’s hair. He could see why his grandfather often did as such when he was in a mood and the girl was near.

“My only goal is get these kids safe and make sure the people that hurt them can never lay hands on another living being. You’re still young enough to make the list the pups are on, but that’s going to be your choice. You’re either what they want you to be or you’re not, there’s no in between here.”

Darius was well aware that a ghoul was the last thing Ava would have been happy about him bringing by, but he really wouldn’t have unless it was an absolute last resort.

“Look, normally, I would have put her down myself, but ghouls don’t usually come with family members still attached,” he muttered, not even attempting to try to make up some excuse or sugar coat things. “I offered to, he refused, so I figured at least putting her in a box would buy some time to figure out another way around things or give him time to come to terms with letting her go.”

She gave him a look, one part sarcasm and one part disbelief as she looked him over. “Put it down yourself? You’re carrying napalm? Because fire is the only thing that actually works on ghouls,” she hissed, still not moving from the doorway. “If that thing gets loose and hurts Jack, I’m killing the boy and putting you in the damn cage and I don’t give a shit if it pisses my daughter off.”

Ty was standing just to the side, still a little ways behind Darius and out of earshot, but he wasn’t an idiot. The girl was clearly not happy to have either one of them there and he didn’t like feeling like a burden. But Kayla was stirring in his arms and time was about to be out.

“I don’t mean to interrupt, but I can’t keep her knocked out much longer and this is not a great area for her to wake up in.”

“It’s not nothing,” he answered. A bit hypocritically, given that he’d brushed off broken ribs as nothing in the past, but hypocritical was hardly the worst thing he’d ever been to August. “What happened? You know I need to know if there’s a threat around here.”

“No threat, calm down. It was just some asshole guy trying to force himself on some girl. I intervened. I got punched. Like I said, don’t pretend to care,” he replied, turning to face him more fully. “It’ll be gone in a day or so.”
