Watching Jurassic Park with two of my favorite little people, so I will be a little in and out
Day: July 5, 2018
“Thanks. It’s little modern for my tastes though,” Delaine shrugged casually, hoping his comment didn’t sound at all cliché, given what he was. “Not too many of the older plantation houses still up for grabs or not in need of major renovation these days.”
Delaine had hoped that when he returned to the area, his old family home might have been claimable with some forged paperwork that implied he was a descendant of them, but he’d been disappointed to find that it was under new ownership and had been off the market for some time now.
“Now you just sound like my grandfather,” he teased, amused that they seemed to have the same taste in architecture. “Vague family friend would argue that the ones in need of renovation are the best ones to get.”
He knew there was something else, something the other wasn’t saying, but he didn’t press. If he knew Delaine better, he might have, but, for now, he let it drop.
Theron nodded, though he really couldn’t see any way that Lyri could ever make him uncomfortable, and he wanted to point out as such.
“It’s fine,” he reassured with a gentle smile. “Just not used to how it feels is all, but it’s nice. I like it, I promise.”
His answer made her feel a lot better but it was a little heart breaking to know he wasn’t used to anyone offering physical comforts.
“Hang around here long enough and you’ll get used to it pretty quickly. We’re a touchy bunch over here,” she explained with a small laugh.
“You’re not the first person to say that to me, but shouldn’t I be the one who decides that? What if I happen to think you’re more than good for me? It should be my choice.” He was tired of people pushing him away because they thought he was too good.
“Who in their right fucking mind would want to love a toxic fucking disaster like me? I threatened you with a knife,” she reminded him. She hadn’t stabbed him but she had punched him pretty damn hard that day.
Don’t love me,” she said, “I’ll ruin you too.
He moved, trying to catch her and soften the fall, settling down on the ground near her. “I can’t help it. No one chooses to fall for someone. But I’m not asking you to feel the same. I’m not asking anything from you.”
It wouldn’t have bothered her as much if she didn’t have feelings for him of her own, but she did. It was why she had tried so hard to push him away and it should have worked. “Pick someone else. You deserve something better.”
It was the absolute last thing she had been expecting to come out of his mouth and Konis could only stand there and gape at him. “Are you a fucking idiot? Why would you even want to feel anything like that for me?” Her lower lip was trembling, dark eyes filling with tears as she tried to make heads or tails out of what he was saying. It had to be a joke.
“I don’t think I am, but you wouldn’t be the first person to accuse me of it.” Not by a long shot. “I think, at first, part of the reason I was drawn to you was that you reminded me of someone I used to love.” He couldn’t pretend that the similarities weren’t there and he saw no point in trying. “But you’re more than that. You’re braver than you believe yourself to be and softer, too, even if you don’t see it. You’re fun, sometimes, and I find you comforting to be around when things have been… sadder than they usually are. I didn’t plan on falling in love with you, but it seems to be happening regardless.”
She was moving away from him, her knee giving and spilling her to the ground. “No, no, no,” she mumbled, panic setting in hard. The last two people she had let that close had only made things worse in the end. “Don’t. Don’t feel that shit for me. Just.. Please don’t.”
“I’m going to keep coming back unless I physically can’t. And honestly, if something happened and I ended up… the rest of the way dead, I’d haunt you as long as you let me. I’m not going anywhere.” His voice softened as he added, “Honestly, Konis, I think I’m a little in love with you. I wouldn’t leave even if I wanted to.”
“I’m not them. I’m not anyone else in your life. I don’t bail on people, even when it’s the easy choice, because that’s not what you do when you care about someone. You care even when things are shitty.”
She was quiet for a moment, the wary look still in her eyes. “Everyone leaves eventually. It’ll hurt more if you keep coming back at first,” she mumbled, refusing to actually look at him.
