“I love you too.”

Teddy understood that she probably meant it differently from how he felt about her. That was something his mom had explained to him a lot when he was growing up; that his feelings were much more intense than most people and that not everyone would be accepting of that, but Teddy would take what he could get with Aislynn. She was his, and he wasn’t going to let her go.

She was beginning to understand why her papa was so attached to her dad and why he was always so sad. It was a sharp realisation and, for a moment, it made her want to start crying. Felines didn’t have the same mating instincts wolves had but Aislynn knew she wouldn’t survive losing Teddy.

“Forever, okay?”

“Then what should we do?” she asked, pulling away to look him in the eye.

Of course, she knew he had a point, but she’d only brought up the idea out of getting carried away with herself, the idea of Chance hurting the assholes who gave her shit because asked him to giving her more of a thrill than she’d openly admit to in front of anyone else.

His hands cupped her cheeks gently, but his eyes remained the same vacant pits they always were. Sure, she made him feel something, but it was barely a flicker.

“It’ll be much easier after you turn eighteen, Princess. I promise,” he assured, the words rolling off of his tongue with a practiced silkiness. It was the same voice he used to lure his victims and it said a lot about just how Chance really saw Sera.

“Don’t make that bet, Wyatt. I nearly gutted my daughter’s best friend just for spite because I wanted to make her hate me. I nearly broke her completely.” It had made her sons hate her but it hadn’t pushed Lyri away and she still didn’t understand.

“I’m not really a hateful person. I think it’s a pretty safe bet to make. The last person I loved broke my heart and I don’t even hate him. It’s just… not who I am. I don’t think you’re in any danger of losing me.” Short of her finding someone else, being happy with another person, he couldn’t think of a reason he’d leave.

“That’s just shit people say. Promises no one fucking keeps!” She was trying to sound angry, but her tone was too high pitched, too desperate. It didn’t help that he had been gone just long enough to make her believe it was for good.
