“Why wouldn’t I?” he asked, frustration leaking into his tone. “Why are you so convinced that no one could care about you?”

“Because even my own children don’t really like me.” It wasn’t entirely true, Lyri cared, but Ko didn’t really see her that often.

“I don’t think it is from lack of trying,” Thanatos sighed, the thought half to himself. He was well aware that there had been at least a couple of others in the family who had made attempts to be such in Konis’ life, but, for one reason or another, Ko always ended up alone eventually.

“Konis takes more than perseverance on another’s part. The issue is that she finds it difficult to let others in and to reach out for their help. She thinks she doesn’t deserve it, and as long as that is the case, I can’t see anyone succeeding, especially not me. I dare say the only one who I could even think might have the patience and gift for it is Eros, but that might be a little problematic for Lyri and Tassos.”

“There is a boy that has been trying, I think. Some reaper,” she replied, the shade of her eyes shifting slightly, a faint glow touching them. There were always far too many people to know what was going on without focusing solely on one person. “He might be stubborn enough to get through to her, but I am unsure of how permanent reapers are.”

A pause, the frown returning. “I do not see what the issue could be. They love their mother, do they not?”

“Mhmm,” he murmured, offering up a weak smile.

He was too exhausted to really register an additional change in his physical state, any nausea or disorientation masked by the fact he hadn’t eaten in quite some time and he was already fuzzy-headed with the need to sleep.

She took his hand once more and guided him towards her bedroom. The blankets were strewn all over, the colors set in pale golds and cream, the curtains blocking out any breath of the outside world.

“Sleep. I’ll keep you safe,” she promised.
