A vaguely incredulous grin spread across Danicka’s face at this comment, accompanied by a burst of laughter at the cheesy pop culture reference, though it did seem just a touch older than she figured him to be, but that could have easily just been down to having an older sibling or a parent that exposed him to that stuff.

“Do I look like Whoopi Goldberg to you?” she shot back, letting him know the reference hadn’t been lost on her.

“Pretty sure it wasn’t Whoopi he was fuckin’ in that movie,” he shot back wit a laugh. “But you could be my Demi Moore for the night.”

It was the worst pick up line he had used in a long while, but it seemed to fit the current mood so he was going to roll with it.

Azrael didn’t answer, his breathing jagged through gritted teeth, the angel straining at the chains to the limit they would allow him, the ones around his wrists starting to cut into his flesh with the force he pulled against them.

In truth, he was already beginning to slip, Az finding it harder to focus with every passing moment, sweat beginning to pour off of him as every breath became a low growl. To an onlooker who didn’t know what was happening, it might seem like a scene from a movie where someone was possessed and being given an exorcism, when in fact it was almost the exact reverse that was occurring.

Asinus. Te potest uti mihi, ex toto corde tuo ego uri.“ Azrael muttered, the tone of his voice shifting distinctly from its usual pitch to something far more menacing and cold.

“You’re only hurting yourself,” Jophiel chided, knowing he was doing far more in causing pain than Az was doing to himself.

Getting through the seals was going quicker than he thought and it was almost a relief to see him reverting back to who he was meant to be. Sure, it wasn’t going to end up too well for himself if Azrael’s memory balanced out and he decided to make good on his threats, but he figured he could hide out until it all blew over.

Haec vilia frater.

Rocket still had his doubts about how well that could be used as a cover story, especially when holding enough celebrity status meant that the papparazzi had a knack for digging into things that even cops weren’t necesarily able to get access to, and he hardly wanted to bring that shit on the pack if anyone discovered the truth.

“You’re hardly the first person to need to do that. There are a few in the limelight that are shifters, ones you might not actually expect,” he remarked, knowing the scent markers well enough to guess what the boy’s concerns might be.

mythsandmonsters:

“Safe’s a relative concept. Got a roof over my head for now, if that’s what you mean? Bailey and Molly are safe, at least. Safer than I probably am. There’s people like them looking out for ‘em now, and they said I could stick around, but I don’t see that being a permanent thing. Just until all this shit is over.” he explained, seeming a little downhearted about the whole thing, like he’d been losing sleep from thinking about all of it.

“I mean, I doubt they really got much use for a human, much less a hunter, once they’ve got all the pups out and shut the whole operation down, so I’m pretty much just leverage for now.”

“Dude, what sort of people have you landed yourself and them pups with?” She knew Molly wasn’t too much younger than her three, so it was a bit of a relief that he had gotten the kids out of hell. It made her think better of him and, honestly, she was a little glad that he seemed to be surviving the massacre of his clan.

“Wait…Are you staying with whatever is systematically wiping out your entire family?”

mythsandmonsters:

“I’m gonna fucking gut you!” the angel screamed, letting himself get angry.

That was the first real indication of how much pain Azrael was enduring as Jophiel broke the seals. It was also a sign that he was starting to come undone, Az usually so placid and quiet, brooding even when his buttons were pushed. Rage wasn’t something that typically came easy to him under normal circumstances.

He had to find a way to hang on to directing that part of him at Jo. He couldn’t let himself prove the other’s assessment of him to be correct, but right now, Az was fighting for the life he’d been living for the last few millennia, frightened of the prospect of becoming a remorseless killer with no control over himself again.

Jo pulled back for a moment and dug out the phone, waving it in front of his brother’s face. He wanted to get his attention and he knew he had it.

“I was thinking you could start with Star or Kellen. I would have went with the psychotic boy but he seems harder to get to,” he taunted, having already gone through the contacts list and narrowed down his options.

“Who would you rather come across you first? I mean, it doesn’t matter, you’ll do as you’re meant to either way, but who to start with?”

mythsandmonsters:

Azrael wasn’t stupid. He knew Jophiel wouldn’t be pulling this little stunt if he didn’t know about Az’s family. Not like this, anyway.

“What, do you think by breaking the seals, my old memories will somehow wipe out the ones I have now? Are you really that fucking stupid?”

Even Az didn’t know if he was bluffing with that statement, because he honestly didn’t know if it would. He had to hold on to the hope that he’d remember though. It was the only chance he had at not hurting them if Jophiel did succeed in unlocking everything.

“Hardly. I just think you’ll be near to feral to start with before you remember. A lot of “damage” can be done in the short span before you get any level of control over yourself.”

He also figured it would hurt that much more when Azrael realized what he had done and that would be punishment enough.

With the first seal undone, he quickly began working on the next, curious to see which one would make the rest come tumbling down. Surely one of them had to be the pivotal domino in the grand scheme of things.

“I’m not gonna pretend to like Teddy, but I’d be a hypocrite if I held someone’s parents against them.” His birth parents hadn’t been kind and really, neither had his dad. His papa was the only good person in his life. Well, and Aislynn, while he’d had her. “But it’s just… weird. I was born human. Wrapping my head around magic still trips me up sometimes, even if I grew up knowing about it.”

“Don’t you literally turn into a cat or something? Seems like that would be harder to believe than reincarnation.” He didn’t understand the other’s logic and it was obvious. It didn’t help that Jeff had a harder time with emotional response than most.

pettythieveswithpotential:

“You don’t seem all that thrilled to have an uncle,” he countered, before shrugging. “I’m still kind of adjusting to the whole ‘having my sister back sort of’ thing. It’s weird.” She was still Aislynn but she also wasn’t and wrapping his head around it all was harder than he had expected.

“I have other uncles.” Well, he had his dad’s brothers but one of them was also technically his grandfather. And then his mom’s biological brother. He didn’t really need some stranger no matter what his mother said. “Is that what’s making it hard to get used to or is it the fact that she’s still with my father after it all?”
