He was never meant to be a parent. Manson alone was proof of that much. But there was no denying the child when Chance had made damn sure no one else had ever touched Sera. It would have been smart for him to just drop the child off on his mother’s doorstep but he couldn’t seem to bare the thought of letting him go.
So Chance took the child and kept him hidden. It gave Sera more time to herself than he liked, but Jack needed him more. It probably wasn’t wise to take a baby with him when he was killing, but he didn’t trust anyone else with his son.
It was a struggle when the child screamed and cried. How was he supposed to know what to do? When feeding or changing didn’t work, he was pretty much out of his elements.
His nerves were already shot to hell, too long between kills, and Jack would not stop screaming. Usually, the boy cried himself out rather quickly, but he had been crying for nearly an hour and Chance was nearly to his limit.
With a frustrated growl, he lifted the boy from his bed and began to pace, repeatedly asking the infant what the hell he was supposed to do?
“I don’t know what the fuck to do, Jack! Just stop crying!” he practically demanded, panic clear in his voice.
But it was the closeness and movement that worked. The more he walked, the quieter the boy became until he drifted off to sleep.
The sudden silence was almost startling and Chance couldn’t help but feel relieved. But had no clue on how to put the boy down again without waking him and that was frustrating in its own.
Eventually, Chance sat down in the only chair in the place, a worn and faded recliner, and just stared at his boy. He liked the kid best like this, quiet and calm and completely his.
It was the last real thought he had before slowly slipping into sleep himself, the baby still cradled gently in his arms.
